Since the development of the transistor and the laser, technology has made use of quantum mechanical effects. The technology of tomorrow, however, will go one step further: rather than passively using the quantum properties of materials, future technologies – quantum technologies – will actively manipulate the quantum mechanical properties of materials in a whole new way, making use of deeply quantum mechanical phenomena such as entanglement to engineer phases of matter that don’t exist in nature, and design computers that are not bound by the conventional rules of classical physics, allowing them to perform tasks that would be impossible for a regular computer.
